How To Make An Anemometer (Medium Level)

How To Make An Anemometer (Medium Level)

Materials:

  • Straight Pin
  • Stapler
  • Tape
  • Straws x2
  • 3oz Plastic Cups x4
  • Small, Long Wooden Stick (About 1cm wide and 20 cm tall)
  • Strong String
  • Scissors
  • Timer
  • Color Marker
  • Ruler
  • Electrical Fan (For testing. Optional)
  • Thick Heavy Cardboard
  • Tape
  • Carpenter Glue

Procedure:

1. Cross the straws so they make a perfect "X".

2. Staple the middle of the straws together twice.

3. Now cut the all the cups in half.

4. Pick out the bottom part of the cups you just cutted.  Color ONLY one cup in with your color marker.

5. Poke a hole that the straw could just fit on the SIDES of the cup. (One hole per cup)

6. Insert the straws in the holes you just made in the cups. (Make sure the straws doesn't stick out of the cups)

7. Tape the straw and the hole on the cup together.

8. Pin the middle of the straws (where you just stapled) onto the stick.

9. Pull the pin up just a little bit so there is space between the straws and the stick.

10. Now put carpenter glue on the bottom of the stick (Not the side you just pinned on), then place it on the thick heavy cardboard.  Hold and press it for 5 minutes (hold the middle of the stick).

11. Draw a straight line on the cardboard with your ruler and color marker.

12. Cut 4 strings.

13. Tape one end to the stick and the other on the cardboard, make sure they are tight, if it's loose, it will not work.  Repeat with the other strings.

14. Get your timer and electrical fan ready.  If you don't have a electrical fan, use the wind outside.

15. Move the cup that you COLORED in step 4 so it lines up with the line you just drew on the cardboard.

16. Start timing, record how many times the colored cup went through the line on the cardboard in 1 minute.  That's your result.

17. Now if you want to put it outside, it will be totally water-proof and you can measure the wind speed everyday!

Forestry - Clear Cutting and Rain Forest Developing

Forestry - Clear Cutting and Rain Forest Developing
A Report Written By AriesLuv at Alberta, CAN

An issue was brought up long ago about clear cutting and rain forest developing by the citizens of Canada, including First Nations, logging companies, loggers, ecologists, and scientists.  They all have different opinions about this issue, let's just look at some:

(Names will not be provided for privacy reasons)

Ecologists: Clear cutting is not a big deal, and so do replanting.  Nature have it's own solutions about regrowing trees.

First Nation Elders: We should leave the forests the way it is, it's okay to cut two or three trees down for a canoe or wood house, but they should be left along.

Logging Companies: If we stop cutting trees to make all kinds of our daily life supplies, many people will be effected by this decision.

......
But, how and why does clear cutting and rain forest developing effects the Earth?

First of all, clear cutting means to cut down ALL the trees in a certain area which might contain habitat of endangered species of animals, areas that have been clear cut takes a long period of time to grown back, too.

Second of all, rain forests are rare, they are homes to thousands of different creatures that can only survive in these forests, if rain forests are ruined, we won't see those creatures ever again.  Trees in rain forests takes thousands of years to grow, if you want to replace a tree in the forest, you need to wait one thousand years.

Most importantly, trees help take away CO2, which is really important.  People releases CO2 EVERY DAY, from driving vehicles, breathing, heat in houses, electrical devices (we get electricity from burning coal in AB)...  If trees were chopped down, than there's going to be one less power to help the Earth from all these pollution from nature.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many citizens have stated their opinions, most of them would like the forests to be left alone, but some are kind of "sitting on the fence".
If you want to stop people from clear cutting and developing, you need to take action!  Let the public hear your idea, write letters to the Peter Kent, Minister of Environment!  If enough citizens wrote letters to him and asks to stop clear cutting and rain forest developing, he will do something to change it, to make it better!  Only if YOU speak up!

Putting Up Your Birdhouse

Putting Up Your Birdhouse

Once you have your birdhouse ready, you can find a piece of wood that's longer than the birdhouse, nail it on.  But be careful NOT to nail in the middle of the birdhouse!

When the piece of wood is nailed on properly, choose a good spot where it is:

  • Well hidden so predators will not see it
  • High from the ground, away from dogs and coyotes
  • Safe and away from kids
Put one big nail through the top of the wood you just nailed on, then one on the bottom.

And your birdhouse is nicely putted on!

Attracting Birds To Your Backyard

What kind of bird do you want to attract to your backyard?

No matter what kind of bird you want to attract to your backyard, you will have to provide (one of if you want, but it work best if you provide them all) these things:

-Bird bath
-Birdhouse
-Bird feeder
*You can find how to make these things in the May section of this blog, too! (Click May on the right side of this blog under Blog Archive)

When you have putted these things up, wait patiently for birds to find your yard!

How to Make A Simple Bird Feeder

How to Make A Simple Bird Feeder

Materials

  • A empty washed 2L milk carton
  • Scissor
  • A light plate or lid that's 8 cm wider than the milk carton (If you don't have any, a cardboard that's 8 cm wider than the carton will work, too)
  • Hook
  • White glue / Carpenter glue

Procedure

1. Put the carton so it's facing up, cut a hole about the size of your two of your thumbs on each BOTTOM EDGE OF THE SIDE of the carton, do not cut a hole in the bottom.

2. Put white / carpenter glue on the bottom of the carton, then press it onto the lid/plate or cardboard, press it for 5 minutes.  (Careful,  don't bend or break the carton)

3. Open the lid of the carton, put in about 65% of seeds.

4. Hook it up onto your tree, fence or somewhere you want.  Then wait patiently for birds to come, it takes a while for them to discover food sources.

Tips
  • Once you started feeding them, do not stop.  Birds get used to a certain food source really quickly (except for some migration birds), if you stop feeding them, they will starve to death.

How To Build Your Own Birdhouse

How to Build Your Own Birdhouse

Materials

  • Wood
*Thickness of the wood doesn't really matter as long as it under 2.5cm (Back piece thickness is between 2.75 cm - 3.75 cm)
  • Pencil and Ruler (for marking and measuring)
  • 25 Long nails
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Something to make a circle out of (Circle measurements below)

Wood Piece Measurements

Top (Roof) : 25.85 cm x 20.6 cm
Back : 32.5 cm x 13.9 cm
Front : 17.8 cm x 22.9 cm
*The hole "width" is 3.4 cm, and the hole is 3.8 cm away from the edge of the front piece.
Bottom : 18 cm x 12.1 cm

Sides:

  • Top Edge: 76 degrees down - 17 cm
  • Side Edges:  Shorter edge: 20.8 cm ___ Longer edge: 25.5 cm
  • Bottom Edge: 16.2 cm

Procedure

1. Cut out each piece in prescribed dimensions.  (Thickness requirements is above in the martial section)

2. Line up angled sides of side and back, nail together (nail requirements below).  Make sure you nail side on top of back.  Repeat on the other side.

3. Take the front piece, nail it onto the sides.  Make sure the hole is up!

4. Put the bottom piece to it's right place and nail it onto the sides.

5. Place the roof in desired area, nail it onto the back piece, so it will spin open and allows you to see inside.

Where the Nails Go

Top: 1 big nail on top in order to let the roof spin and you can see inside the birdhouse.
Front: 4 on each side
Sides: 5 on the longer edge side
Bottom: 3 on each side
Back: No nails needed.

Some Tips

  • This birdhouse is meant for bluebirds, sparrows, nuthatches and chickadees.  You can prepare a birdbath or  some seeds in a bird feeder to attract them.
  • Do NOT put a perch on the birdhouse, it will allow predator birds to come and eat the birds in the birdhouse.
  • Try to put the birdhouse somewhere safe and high from the ground, birds like habitats where it's not bothered.

How to Make Your Own Bird Bath

Arts and Crafts

How to Make Your Own Bird Bath

Materials:

  • A pot (cup will be fine, too)
  • A plate (Frisbee will work if you don't want to use a plate)
  • Some white glue (you can find it in craft shops)
  • Some paint if you want

Procedure:

1. Turn the pot (cup) upside down, then add white glue on top.
2. Place plate on top of the glue, let it dry for a day or two.

3. When these steps are done, you can paint your bird bath if you want!
4. Bring your bird bath to your backyard, add some clean water to attract birds.
5. You are done!

Important Tips:

1. The water inside your bird bath needs to be changed every one or two days.

2. The bird bath needs to be cleaned at least once each week. (Make sure you don't touch the bird bath water with your hands, put on some gloves.)

3. If a bird was found laying down on your bird bath, that means that the water contains diseases, it must be sanitized before using again.

Leave a message if you have more questions!
